Working While Building Your Staging Business

An HSR Member Success Story...

Can you have a full time job or kids AND start a staging business? Absolutely! In fact, I think it's almost easier to have the comfort of being able to "take your time" to go through the resources that the Home Staging Resource provides in their Member's Training Area rather then feel rushed to create a business and make an income. Here is a wonderful story of an HSR Member who did just that:

Dear Audra,

I had started my business a year ago, while I had a full time job and two kids. I have now just been dedicated to my business full time for 3 months. These 3 months has probably been the best time during my entire working life. I really enjoy thinking on all different levels of my business - from marketing to selling to planning and implementing a project, thinking on the strategic side to move forward. It is sooo much fun!

I want to thank you for the great program that you have developed. It is so helpful starting out the business without wasting time trying to reinvent the wheel. Once the business is up and running and you got some experience you can always change and tweak the basics learned at HSR to fit best your own business model ideas - but the HSR program really provides the business background of the foundation.

Even though it is harder to break in with real estate agents than I thought, I have developed some good relationships over the past 3 months. I have also been successful in getting business from home sellers directly, who have not been so happy about their real estate agents not having suggested staging as a marketing tool in the first place. Currently I am doing more staging than redesign work. Design work is often a repeat business from former staging clients when they are moving into their new home.

As a recommendation for those who are new in the business - it is so important that you get yourself out and known. Networking events - even if there are no real estate agents - can be a great source of referrals - everyone knows someone who sells or plans to sell a house. What did not work for me was dropping off my brochures or door hangers at houses that had a "for sale" sign in the front lawn. It resulted in zero response.

In June I had been live on 3 local TV shows (ABC, NBC, FOX) (2 videos are on my web site http://www.redesignyourspace.com/media.html) This was a fun experience and I hope there are more to come in the future.

If you are serious about your business and want to do this full time, I also recommend home stagers to join RESA. RESA sets the bar of the home staging industry standards.
